 Welcome August,

Dear Readers,

In the Southern Hemisphere, August is the seasonal equivalent of February in the Northern Hemisphere. In many European countries, August is the holiday month for most workers.  You can be unique at your vacation in Sunny Jenni's handmade shirt:

Numerous religious holidays occurred during August in ancient Rome.

Dear Reader,

I would like to feature some new SPS Team shops and some old one. I chose a beautiful animal as a common point.

It lives in the woods, more than 200 species exist.  It can rotate their heads and necks as much as 270°. The smallest are weighing as little as 31 g (1 oz) and measuring some 13.5 cm (5 in), the largest are are 71 cm (28 in) long and 4.2 kg (9.3 lb) weigh. Different species produce different sounds. Their eyes are large, forward-facing and a conspicuous circle of feathers is around each eye.

Do you have a guess, who it is?
Of course the right answer is  the owl.

The artist world love to use this bird a lot. They are cute, colorful and so many possibility to paint the feathers. You can find this cute mug here.

"What does an owl symbolize?
An owl symbolizes intuition, transition, wisdom, silence, observation, quick wit, independence, power, intelligence, and protection. Its ability to see in the dark endows it with the energies of the moon and night, as well as makes it symbolic of mystery, hidden knowledge, and feminine fertility." says the Astrology Web.

Just a couple of cute SPS Team owl items:
a nursery decor,
 an apron,
an original painting,
and a rustic mug.

Some interesting  "owl dream" meaning from the same website:

"A white owl in your dream promises good surprises and pleasant moments.
To see a gray owl is an indication of your facing the consequences of your past actions.
Seeing a black owl with red eyes is a warning of some mistake that you need to rectify.
An owl with yellow eyes stands for sympathy and intimate friendship.
A golden owl symbolizes sufficiency and understanding.
An owl with green eyes refers to your attempts to gain recognition and claim independence.
A brown owl stands for your work that is practical and grounded.
A purple owl refers to wealth, royalty, and spirituality.
A red owl reflects your anger and passion."

I love owls and have many different colorful bird at my shop too:)

The Etsy Seller's Guide to Social Media

The Etsy Seller's Guide to Social Media: Building your independent brand on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Instagram

After your Etsy shop is set up and your items have been listed, it can be very beneficial to start building your brand identity on social media. Social media helps you attract new customers and develop ongoing relationships with customers who could become very loyal to you and your products for years to come.

Connecting with fans on social media is your opportunity to give customers a more personal, behind the scenes look at your business. It's your chance to tell the story of what makes you and your business special. What inspires you? What projects are you working on?

Each social media platform tends to attract different types of audiences, so it's useful to promote slightly different content in different places. Depending on the amount of time you are able to commit to social media, it's perfectly fine to start small and choose just one place to promote yourself.

Facebook

With over 1 billion active users Facebook is the most popular social media platform around. As you begin promoting your business page on Facebook, it's quite likely that many of your followers will be friends, family and co-workers that want to know "What have you been up to?"

Since many of your Facebook followers have a real world connection to you and your business they are very interested in your day to day successes and struggles. Show off your work in progress, celebrate sales, share your inspirations and ask questions.

Twitter

Twitter is a very effective platform for attracting new customers through the thoughtful use of #hashtags. However, it can be challenging to capture people's attention in 140 characters or less. That makes Twitter a great place to be more quirky, funny or even a bit vague so people will click on your links.

Be funny, clever, insightful and don't underestimate the power of sharing pictures of your pets or random things that just make you smile.

Google+

Google+ is the new kid on the block when it comes to social media and is still regularly making significant changes to attract more users. As with Facebook and Twitter, you can share a behind the scenes peek at what makes you special on your page.

Google+ also makes it very easy to connect with others who have similar interests through the use of communities. Don't be afraid to join a variety of communities and share your items. Be aware that if you share the exact same content in multiple communities in a short period of time, Google+ will eventually start marking your community posts as spam and they may be permanently removed by community moderators.

Instagram

Instagram makes it easy to share your vision of the world. Unlike any of the other platforms, you must use the app on a smartphone or tablet to share content.  Just snap a picture of what you are doing or products you are listing. When you are writing the caption of your photo, add a few relevant #hashtags.

It's important to include a link to your shop or website in your Instagram profile. This is the only place Instagram displays a clickable link.

Quick Tips

As you begin posting on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram or any platform, it's important to keep in mind that there's a fine line between promoting yourself and being spammy. If you only share links to your shop items and Etsy treasuries, your followers will quickly lose interest and will likely unfollow you.

Also, if you are use more than one type of social media, it's possible that people are following you in more than one place. Posting different content on different platforms keeps your fans engaged.

And, of course, don't forget to put the "social" in social media. Like and follow others with similar interests. See what they are posting. Leave thoughtful comments and like and share posts from others. What goes around, comes around.

Meet our Members! -- Rose from All You Need is Beads

The SPS Team is an international team of artists, artisans and creators working together to promote their finest work!

Every week we are happy and proud to introduce a member of our outstanding team! They come from different backgrounds, countries, cultures and artistic horizons, but they all have one thing in common : they are driven, creative, dynamic, and dedicated to their Etsy business and to their team, SPS Team!

******************************************

Today we are thrilled to introduce Rose, a jewelry designer and craft lover from Ontario,
Canada! She opened her shop called "All You Need is Beads" in October 2013.

In Rose's shop you will find an amazing assortment of handcrafted jewelry, including earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and more! You can also find some beautiful men's jewelry, and unique art and gift items.

Let's meet Rose and learn about her Etsy adventure, what inspires her, the social media platforms she likes to promote on, and the role Etsy fellow shop owners and teammates play for her.

 All You Need is Beads

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Rose, I just recently turned 60 on January 18th. I have been married for 25 years, which was on January 20th. I have two children, a 24-year old daughter and a 22-year old son. Yes, I was a late bloomer!!! My husband is a marine engineer and is away for almost 10 months of the year. So some could see why I need a creative outlet.

I have always loved crafting. It's in my personality I guess to be creative. I have always had a desire to make and give away items. And I don't just do jewelry. I also like painting, drawing, and experimenting with many mediums. My craft room always looks like an explosion went off in it. They say that's the sign of a creative person. I guess I'm really creative!!!!

How did your Etsy adventure begin? Tell us about the opening of your shop, your first sale, etc.

I began selling on Etsy over a year ago because I really needed to have somewhere to sell my things, or quit making them. A friend suggested Etsy, and I was hesitant at first because I had never heard of Etsy, and thought to myself, "Who would want to buy my items?"

After much consideration, I decided to give it a go and of course did what probably every new shop owner who doesn't have a clue does. Uploaded all my items, tried to fill out all the required fields and sat back and waited for the sales!!! Well of course there was nothing, then one or two trickled in. I was thrilled, but perplexed as to how do all the others get people to find their shops.

It's been an uphill learning curve for me, and I have learned a lot by asking and reading every bit of information I could get. I'm sure I do not have it all figured out, but now I have so much more insight thanks to SPSTeam and all the other teams I have joined.

Why do you sell on Etsy? As a hobby or full-time job, etc.

I guess I would have to say that this is more of an outlet for my hobby. I do not count on it for my living as some other might. I do not want to be over whelmed with it.

Are you a buyer on Etsy as well? What do you usually look to buy?

I have made purchases from other Etsy shops. What I look for are supplies. Usually things that I cannot find around my town.

What are the specific challenges for a jewelry designer and creator?

I think jewelry is a little challenging. I like to cater to all ages, not just one group. I am not always up on what is current. It may be part of my down fall to not focus on one age group in particular, but since I do not have to make a living at it, I am free to do so.

I love to go find unusual things and turn them into a wearable items. Some might think it's crazy, and I'll admit, some of my designs are crazy, but I always say every one is different, we all have different tastes, and maybe somebody out there will just love it. And it has happened. I also get inspiration right from the beads or items I have picked up because I saw some potential in it.

How do you organize your time? How does a typical day selling on Etsy look like?

A typical day for me is to promote on all my teams of which there are currently 10. I plan it so that I can promote on two teams every hour, then if I do have an order, get it ready and shipped. If there is no order, I might go and try to design something new and different. I try and balance my shop and my home, and not get over whelmed by it all. I do not work out side of the home so it is easier for me than some others I'm sure.

What is the one thing you would like to change most on Etsy to accommodate your business?

I think that there is room for improvement on Etsy. I do not really understand how to read all the graphs to learn where most of my sales do come from. I am currently working on trying to drive traffic to my shop from outside Etsy.

I have a couple of pet peeves, but they are minor. Like why isn't there a system in place that keeps track of the hearts that need to be clicked in order to promote? Or at least have the hearts stop turning red when you have reached your limit.

Which is your favorite social media to use and recommend to other sellers for cross-promoting?

The easiest social medias for me is Pinterest and Facebook. I also use Twitter, Tumblr and Bestie. I promote for others on Facebook as much as possible and wish that they would reciprocate. This would benefit us all. I also realize that we don't want to bother our friends with our business, but they have the option to unfollow if they want to.

I recently read that Pinterest posts stay around for a few weeks where as tweets are only minutes, and that you should re-pin your items at least every two to three weeks. I also wish that the successful sellers would be more forth coming with tips.

In your opinion, what makes Etsy so unique?

There is a wonderful community of people on Etsy, and I am slowly getting to know some of them. Wonderful people just like me who participate on teams, share what they are doing. It's exciting to me that they are from all over the world. That's what makes Etsy so unique, You can communicate with all of the shop owners and share thoughts and ideas.

How does a team such as SPS Team help you with your Etsy business?

SPSTeam was my very first team. I found it while going through the list of teams to join. I really can't tell you why I picked and joined it at that time, but am so glad I did. I would so love to see more participation in the threads from such a large team.

The SPSTeam was and still is a wonderful group of people who have always helped me with any problems I have had, or have done their best to explain things to me.

I always dreamed of retailing my items, but always doubted myself. I am always proud when someone wears and loves my items.

Renew or Re-Do Old Listings? Bringing a Fresh Perspective to Your Shop for 2015

The Allure of the New

I've been making and selling jewelry on Etsy for about 5 years.  I have found that my "eye" for jewelry design (my own and others' creations) is always developing and changing.  I am always eager to explore new materials and try new ideas.  In fact, the quest for the "new, rare, one-of-a-kind" element (beads, pendants, etc.) that will make the next piece a knockout can become obsessive!

Reviewing the Old

In the New Year, however, I decided to take a critical look back at items that had expired or been renewed multiple times.  Some of those pieces represent a significant investment in materials. But instead of helping me fund new supplies (or recoup past expenses) they were just 'sitting on the shelf.'

The first older piece I redid with a new vision of its possibilities sold almost as soon as it was listed. Other pieces I've redone haven't sold yet, but I'm happy that they better represent who I am now as a jewelry designer.  Not all crafts lend themselves to makeovers as easily as jewelry, but looking back at past creations and reflecting on what worked and what could be stronger can help all artists to grow.

Look Elsewhere

Looking objectively at your own work isn't easy, however.  Here is the single most important tip I've found for bringing a fresh eye to your own pieces:  Look elsewhere first!  Go hunting for inspiration! Look at a LOT (hundreds, at least) of creations by other people working in your craft.  Don't limit yourself to a single style or time period or theme, or to what you already know you like--just look for ANY jewelry (or pottery or fiber art) that makes you catch your breath, makes you want to reach out and touch.

Make an Inspiration Gallery

Use Pinterest or your Etsy favorites to make a good-sized collection of the pieces that resonate for you. Do you notice any patterns, colors, or small details that stand out in the pieces you especially love?  Which ones surprise you or intrigue you the most?

Don't worry about being influenced by other artists' work.  As long as you're not copying someone's creation, there is nothing wrong with absorbing fresh influences and then bringing them into your own creative process.  Artists have always been inspired by each others' creations. Chances are, when you come back to your own pieces, new possibilities will jump out at you.

Here are some pieces by other jewelry designers that caught my eye--and some words for what inspires me in them:
Storytelling, Asymmetry, Unexpected, Bold Colors

Small Changes Add Up

One other tip I've learned from revising my past jewelry designs:

Sometimes a small change can make a piece feel new.  Here is one piece I redid, adding a pendant to give the necklace more interest.

Sometimes, also, a new photo of the same piece may be all that's needed!  Product photography is another topic and a HUGE challenge for jewelry sellers--one I'm still working on.  I just bought my first DSLR camera--now I need to learn how to use it!

There is certainly more to growing and developing your shop than revising older listings. But if you make pieces that can be altered, looking back at older listings might present the opportunity to refresh past creations, revitalize your shop, and boost your sales for 2015.

PRESENTED TO YOU BY OUR LEADER:

Once upon a time I wanted to grow up to be an artist. As it turned out, I became an English teacher (which I loved) and a mother of two amazing children (which I loved) and somehow I never found much time for art. When I started exploring crafts, it was like a flip got switched. There is now paint and paper, shells and driftwood, beads and wool and more beads spread all over my kitchen and I feel like a child who doesn't want to stop playing...
